What is Contemporary Home Décor?

Friday 27, January 2012 | By Mary Elete

When choosing décor for your home, you want a style that feels like “you” and reflects your personal tastes. Contemporary décor allows you a great deal of latitude to incorporate the pieces you like best.

When referring to decor styles, contemporary is not the same as Modern. Modern decor, specifically, refers to a simple, clean-lined style popular in the middle of the 20th century. While many Modern pieces may appear in contemporary decor, not all contemporary decor is strictly Modern. Modern decor is simple and minimal, with straight lines and angular frames. Colors tend to be natural or neutral, with white or cream-colored walls. Floors in a modern decor are usually hardwood or cement. The furniture seldom touches the floor – for instance, sofas and chair have legs that raise them up for a more clean and formal look.

What distinguishes contemporary decor...

from modern is there are few style or color boundaries. If you like to be bold and daring with your decor, contemporary decor may be the choice for you. This carefree style has few strict rules, so you can pick and choose what you want.

Contemporary design allows you the freedom to experiment with different color schemes and styles. As a dramatic departure from modern decor's straight lines and neutral colors, contemporary decor can showcase rounded and curved lines, asymmetrical patterns, smooth reflective surfaces, bright colors and unusual-but-attractive color combinations. With contemporary design, the possibilities are endless. Contemporary decor gives you the freedom to add new pieces and colors that you love when you want without having to completely overhaul a room (unless you want to).

If you're into vintage furniture and decorative pieces, contemporary décor gives you the freedom to incorporate the items you love into a warm, fun, eclectic look. This type of decor brings its own beauty to any home while giving you the freedom to express your personal quirks and preferences.
